Your Community Needs Your Voice…Become a writer, editor, and publisher
The Green Mountain College Media Cooperative supports student media, including The Mountaineer college newspaper which publishes in print and online with text, audio and video.
For the 2009-2010 academic year, the Media Co-op is seeking applications for a range of media managers, including:
- Managing Editor (for The Mountaineer, print and online) 0r Editorial Board
- Business Manager (includes role of Media Co-op Treasurer and Mountaineer Advertising/Marketing)
- Media Manager: Audio (including streaming radio)
- Media Manager: Video (online)
- Content Producers/Editors (to serve as associate editors, writers, and bloggers for print and online media. Some suggested roles include “online media/photo editor,” a “documentary/features editor,” an “art/culture/music editor,” an “adventure/sports editor,” a Farm Editor, a Sustainability Editor, and a Community Editor.
If you have an interest, we suggest you apply for one of the above positions, or brainstorm a unique title and a focus that fits your expertise as well as the interests of a specific college audience.
GAIN EXPERIENCE: Job duties include but are not limited to writing, editing, organizing, and publishing approximately 3 articles and/or 2 multimedia productions per month. Experience is preferred but not required. Successful candidates will demonstrate:
- an ability to commit to a publishing process and a publishing team;
- a range of writing and media skills;
- and a commitment to learn and practice contemporary media publishing, including news/information, advocacy/commentary, and documentary narratives.
Students may elect to receive credit by enrolling in CMJ 4010 Publishing Practicum. Whether enrolled in this practicum or not, these service positions are educational in nature, though these student publications are managed solely by students and for students, with advice from a faculty adviser.
SELECTION: The primary positions will be selected by board members of the GMC Media Cooperative, a student-media initiative that offers unified support and strategic planning for student media. Primary positions will be supported with work-study or comparable funds. Additional media positions will be eligible for end-of-semester and end-of-year honorariums. The expected tenure of these positions is one academic year, though shorter commitments may be negotiated.

FIRST DEADLINE: To apply, send an e-mail (with Subject: Mountaineer 2009) by Monday, May 4, to The Mountaineer adviser, Prof. Ron Steffens, at steffensr@greenmtn.edu.
Your application should include:
- Your name, contact info, the TITLE or TYPE of position you seek, and an introductory paragraph detailing your reasons for seeking the position and the skills that support your application;
- A link or digital copy of a resume that notes relevant experience (gained in class, in media positions, or via personal experience); and
- A link or digital copy to a writing sample or a publication you have written, edited, and/or produced. Such a publication may be produced from a class or be a digital copy of an original work of media.
