Your Community Needs Your Voice…Become a writer, editor, and publisher

The Green Mountain College Media Cooperative supports student media, including The Mountaineer college newspaper which publishes in print and online with text, audio and video.
The student-managed Media Co-op is staffed by a range of media managers, including:

  • Managing Editor (for The Mountaineer, print and online)
  • Business Manager (includes role of Media Co-op Treasurer and Mountaineer Advertising/Marketing)
  • Media Manager: Audio (including streaming radio)
  • Media Manager: Video (online)
  • Content Producers/Editors to serve as associate editors, writers, and bloggers for print and online media. Position descriptions vary, based on staff priorities and individual goals. Examples include “online media/photo editor,” a “documentary/features editor,” an “art/culture/music editor,” an “adventure/sports editor,” a Farm Editor, a Sustainability Editor, and a Community Editor.

If you have an interest, we suggest you apply for one of the above positions, or brainstorm a unique title and a focus that fits your expertise as well as the interests of a specific college audience.
GAIN EXPERIENCE: Job duties include but are not limited to writing, editing, organizing, and publishing approximately 3 articles and/or 2 multimedia productions per month. Experience is preferred but not required. Successful candidates will demonstrate:

  • an ability to commit to a publishing process and a publishing team;
  • a range of writing and media skills;
  • and a commitment to learn and practice contemporary media publishing, including news/information, advocacy/commentary, and documentary narratives.

Students may elect to receive credit by enrolling in CMJ 4010 Media Practicum. Whether enrolled in this practicum or not, these service positions are educational in nature; each publication has an adviser who provides training and publishing advice. Student publications are managed solely by students and for the student and local communities.
SELECTION: The primary position(s) will be selected by board members of the GMC Media Cooperative, a student-media initiative that offers unified support and strategic planning for student media. Primary positions will be supported with work-study or comparable funds. Additional media positions may be eligible for end-of-semester and end-of-year honorariums. The expected tenure of these positions is one academic year, though shorter commitments may be negotiated.
If you know someone who might fill any of these positions, please encourage them — or encourage yourself — to apply. For background, read the The Mountaineer newspaper and visit the website, www.themountaineer.org. Students who publish with The Mountaineer serve their community while also learning to write and publish.
