A laina’s destiny was not always to be an Adventure Education major. From a young age she had her sights set on professional basketball, but her career peaked in the 1st grade. Though at the time she survived numerous escapades—such as jumping off the roof of the shed at her childhood home in Westminster, MA.—she unfortunately broke her leg in a much more mundane skiing accident. The subsequent time in a cast caused her to miss what turned out to be a key season in her basketball skill development.
Toward the end of high school, Alaina turned her sights on Green Mountain College and the Adventure Ed. major after being drawn in by a college recruiting poster that featured a pair of ice climbers. Though during her time here she has discovered that she does not enjoy ice climbing, she has found a variety of outdoor activities that suit her interests. Alaina has been deeply involved with the Adventure Education program, and hopes to move west to Colorado to enjoy snowboarding and climbing in the big mountains.
Her career and personal aspirations go hand in hand; next year she hopes to intern with the outdoor recreation program at Fort Carson, CO. Beyond that, like many juniors, Alaina is unsure of what the future holds. There’s even the possibility that her basketball career might pick back up. “I’m thinking of playing for the school next year,” she said in the interview. With no broken bones to stop her, Alaina Killion may just be headed for the big time.
