Profile Article- Jose Galvez Contreras
Winter break is a time where most students relax and enjoy the freedoms that a month without classes affords them. Though he enjoyed his time off from classes to spend with family and friends, for junior Jose Tulio Galvez Contreras life in his home country, Honduras, is not all fun and games.
Honduras has historically been a dangerous country; however with the recent political insurgency, organized crime, low education rates, and rampant poverty, it has become much worse. Over the winter break, Jose and five classmates traveled to his home and experienced what life in Honduras is like today.
“The situation there is not good, I was not comfortable living in my house,” stated Jose. He explained that the citizens there are especially hostile to Americans and having five Americans traveling with him did not ease his concerns.
As many have observed in their time at Green Mountain College, Jose is very active in the campus community. Coming from a political background, he holds very passionate beliefs about politics and social concerns, both here and in Honduras. Thus, it is not surprising that he desires to return home to get involved in politics. “I hope I can make a change,” Jose explains.
Overcoming the adversity of being in such an unstable country is a true testament to his perseverance. Not only was he in possible danger, but he brought his peers, his friends, home with him to experience what life in Honduras is truly like.
Staying loyal to his background, Jose is mainly concerned for his family. Despite getting excited concerning the political issues about which he is so passionate, his family is the one thing he feels the most anxious about. In a solemn tone he explains, “they are a part of the political environment. I am always concerned for them.”
