Friday, February 12th marked a significant event for the Poultney community, the opening of a new business on Main Street.  A little before 7:00, the Tiny Theater opened its doors to a crowd of anxiously awaiting – and cold – GMC students, professors, and community members.  There were three movies shown in a row, starting with the Princess Bride followed by two showings of Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

The theater is the second new business to open on Main Street recently, the other being Cafe Dale.
What makes the Tiny Theater unique is that it was envisioned, renovated, and is being run by two GMC, alumni Joel Barker and Amy Barra.  They have been working on the theater for the last four months and are excited to share their work with the community.

The business offers another form of entertainment to the town that was previously lacking.  While there are many great restaurants and businesses in the area, one has to travel some distance to sit down and see a movie.

Another reason it is so unique is that it is extremely affordable.  Tickets are just $4.00 while popcorn, sodas, and candy start at $1.50.  Also sold are Brown’s apple cider donuts and Vermont Sweet Water on tap.  Their support for local businesses is being reciprocated as restaurants and businesses in town are offering discounts for Tiny Theater ticket stubs.

While opening night brought out many in the community, some voiced frustration at the amount of support. “Even though there were many students in attendance, I was disappointed to notice the absence of many prominent community members.  If the business is to succeed, the community, as a whole, will need to embrace it,” said GMC junior José Gálvez Contreras.

However, students have been helping the Tiny Theater even before it opened its doors.  GMC Junior Frank Riley led a group of Honors Floor students in cleaning up and painting the theater a few weeks prior to opening night.  “The college’s success is closely linked to the town’s success – and vice versa.  It is not every day a new business opens in Poultney so we all need to come out and support it,” Riley said.

Hours:

  • Sunday-Wednesday: Noon–9:30 P.M.
  • Friday, Saturday: Matinees and Midnight showings
