Students reach out to community
More than 70 community members from Poultney region attended at a community dinner hosted at Green Mountain College’s dinning hall on November 10.
The community dinner was organized by Professor Vangie Blust’s Food, Society, and the Environment class.
Over 200 students gave up their dinner to host for the guests.
The community’s older adults from the Young at Heart Senior Center, Poultney Food Shelf, Poultney Mentoring program, GMC staff, and Rescue Fire Squad enjoyed their meal at the school’s dinning hall prepared by Chartwells.
“It is nice to see community members at GMC,” a GMC student, Maggie Denison, states.
The community dinner presented students with an opportunity to donate their meal towards a good cause, or join community members in dining.
“It is a good opportunity for community members to come here and eat a meal, and a good opportunity for us to help out,” another student, Kiley Mathews, says.
Eating together is a social scene where people feel comfortable to bond with one another.
“It feels good to participate in this,” says Ally Putnam, “You get to meet people from Poultney you wouldn’t otherwise meet.”
A Chartwells employee states, “This is grand. It’s a very friendly evening. I think this is a wonderful thing students are doing and I’m glad to be a part of it.”
A community member also remarked, “It was so nice for you all to do this.”
“An elderly couple who came for the first time expressed to me their disbelieve about you, as college students, donating your meals for them,” Professor Blust said in her email send to the college community, “They everyone else thanked you and the college as a whole for the even.”
