Holistic Wellness: Exploring the Salt Cave

by Amberlee Miller

The Salt Cave at the Pyramid Holistic Wellness Center in Rutland is one of the few places where people can go and invest in personal well-being while being exposed to Himalayan salt.

In other countries, such as Asia and Europe, salt caves are used to treat medical conditions such as blood-pressure, skin, conditions, breathing issues, allergies, arthritis, and more. Within an hour session, you are exposed to over 84 essential minerals, including, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and much more. When my floor in Cree decided to plan a trip to the Cave, I couldn’t resist my curiosity.

Entering the cave I was not sure what to expect. I took off my shoes and sat down in a dark room covered in salt. The floor, wall, and ceiling – everything was pure Himalayan salt. I buried my feet into the hard granules that felt like sand in between my toes. Light from the fireplace and various lanterns gave off an eerie glow, but they warmed the cold room. Ambient music played softly in the background, cueing to visitors that it was time to relax. I laid back in my chair trying to mediate.

Within a half hour, I began to feel anxious. I looked at the others in the room with me; they were either asleep or in a deep mediation. I tried to close my eyes and relax, but I couldn’t; my skin felt dry and itchy; I was irritable. When the hour was up, I left the cave feeling nothing but extreme thirst, spending the rest of the day sleeping off this terrible headache that had overcome me immediately after leaving.

The second time I visited the salt cave, I brought Christian Sapovits. This is his experience.

I was suffering from flu-like symptoms and went to the salt cave to experience something different besides the usually antibiotics. When I was in the cave, I felt like I was on a kind of cold, dark, beach. I sat in the chair and when the recording came on and said ‘recline,’ I put my chair back and was out like a light.

After my hour session, my flu like symptoms changed. I felt completely cleansed and decongested. The salt in the cave is the same salt I use in my Netti pot which I use to clear my sinuses. Maybe that is why I felt better, maybe it was something more. I would go again if I was sick.

The salt cave brings on a wealth of different experiences for those who visit, as far as curing the flu, I wouldn’t count on it
