A fter surviving what could have been a fatal car accident in the fall of 2008, Mason Lord returned to Green Mountain College after taking two semesters off. “It’s awesome being back at school. It has aided in my psychological recovery,” Lord states.
With a crash that nearly amputated his leg, Lord is learning to walk again. He currently has an Ilizarov external fixator on his leg acting as a cast because the metal plate previously in his leg was removed due to a staff infection. Lord has had this device on his leg since April and will find out soon how much longer it will need to stay on.
Even with his injury, Lord always has a positive attitude. “Things could have been a lot worse,” he states. He tries not to let his leg impair him from partaking in day to day activities. “When the weather is nice I like to go on my boat and fish,” he states.
From his accident, Lord states he has learned many life lessons. “I’ve learned not to sweat the small stuff in life,” he states. “A lot of people think engines are their friends because they take them places, but I’ve learned sometimes they reach up and almost take your leg off,” he laughs.
