The Capstone Experience
BY CANDY SMITH
As we inch closer to the end of the spring semester, students from all over campus are putting a final bit of effort into their academic year, strutting their stuff to the community.
On April 2, the uniform was suits and hiking boots as students from the Outdoor Studies Seminar course planned and executed their capstone experiences as students in the Recreation and Outdoor Studies department, by facilitating the Outdoor Studies Symposium at Green Mountain College. The theme of the symposium was “Recreation Values in a Changing Economy” a culmination of senior student presentations and workshops, as well as guest speakers. The student presentations focused on the economic recession and how people entering the recreation field could maintain a healthy business despite the crisis. Around campus, students have had many opportunities to show their devotion to their given field of study. Student Colloquium presentations (happening throughout the month of April) gave faculty-nominated student groups the opportunity to share the fruits of their academic labor with peers.
Student clubs have also been active in the community. Groups like The Belly-Dancing club shared their skills at the Fem Fair, and members of PANTS and Diversity organized the “As Vermont As Maple Syrup” marriage equality demonstration. The YES! Coffeehouse, a facility which was founded by students, received a large makeover. With a new menu and new technology, the Yes! Coffeehouse is stepping into its second generation.
Belly Dancers performed at this year’s Fem Fair on March 19.
