GMC professor receives a Fulbright recognition

Professor of Fine Arts Dick Weis was recently accepted on the roster for the Fulbright Senior Specialists Program. Fulbright Specialists are placed on a list (called the Fulbright List) so they can be matched with project proposals initiated by institutions in other countries. The application for the Fulbright Senior Specialist Program includes assembling a portfolio of past experiences and a series of recommendations that pertain to a program the recipient outlines.

Fulbright applicants had to define their expertise under one of twenty categories; Weis choose American Studies. Professor Weis organizes the International and Study Abroad programs at Green Mountain, and his proposal is a culmination of his interests.

Professor Weis’ proposal states that he will help young artists in other countries by doing any of three things: taking on the role of a teacher for young artists and helping develop an art curriculum for professors outside of the US, helping young artists prepare their portfolios and artist statements for an English language audience, or helping critique young artists’ work in English.

This Fulbright achievement, however, is not the first that Professor Weis has received. In 2003, his first Fulbright honor allowed him to be an artist-in-residence at Hannam University in South Korea. During this time, he became interested in developing a strong connection between Hannam University and Green Mountain College. Upon his return to GMC, he helped set up a Korean/American website intended to connect faculty and students in a variety of fields with their counterparts at Hannam.

Professor Weis’ acceptance into the Fulbright Senior Specialists Program roster allows for him to be contacted by anybody interested in his area of specialty. If this happens, he may be offered a grant to work for four to six weeks with the participating institution. Currently, Professor Weis is contacting many people to see who would like to benefit from his proposal. He describes this as a bit of a waiting game “Now, I’m patiently waiting to see if something develops. If it doesn’t, I’m honored to be on the list. It’s a very distinguished group of people,” Weis said.
