GMC Squirrels go international

BY NIKKI PFEIFFER AND ROBBIE LEEDS
A group of seventeen ultimate frisbee players packed up their warm clothes and headed out for Montreal for the third tournament of the Green Mountain Flying Squirrels Fall season, The tourney was held by McGill University and the games were played on both Saturday and Sunday. The Squirrels’ first match proved to be their toughest of the day. Over half of GMC’s team is new to the game this semester, but it only took that first game to relax and play confidently. As the day went on, players started to heat up on the frosty fields. Ian Smith, a freshman, used his agility and great catching to keep solid flow on offense, while Julia Marcusa, another freshman, played incredible zone defense after just a week of practice. Some of the other new Squirrels, such as Sydney Gard, Josh Saxe, Emily Provonsha, and Cai Manoogian proved to be essential to securing four straight wins to wrap up the first day. There was much celebration!

At the beginning of the second day, for some reason, morale was low due to the prior night’s celebration. Thankfully, Pat Mahoney, a man of many words, singlehandedly rallied the tired and cold Vermonters. Though it did not mean victory, the team was full of spirit and laughter. After barely losing their firts game, the Squirrels moved on to play an excellent alum team from McGill U. After several Chuck Domenie-John Warfel connections, the game became incredibly close. It came down to the wire, but the experienced alum team won the game by a couple of points. In the end, the tournament was a success in the eyes of GMC’s two captains. The Squirrels offense looked sharp, reducing the number careless mistakes and the newly-taught zone defense was a key element in the 4-3 record for the weekend. It was a long one, but the team was not only proud of their great play, but also pleased with a great time they had.
