One Mighty Seed
One Mighty Seed wins Battle of the band — prize was $500 and getting to open for Toots & the Maytals at this year’s spring concert (April 19, free and outside!)
Interview by Katie Sobalsky with keyboarder and vocalist, Cameron Steinmetz
MOUNTAINEER: How long have you guys played together?
STEINMETZ: We initially got together to play Battle of the Bands, but in light of this success our thoughts of continuing to play together and book other venues have become more numerous and excited. We practiced for about a month, less than that, and planned out our entire set, start to finish, so that we could just show up and play it.
M’NEER: Describe your sound.
STEINMETZ: Well balanced, more so after hearing it, we recorded it to listen afterwards, and we can continue to listen as we play and refine our sound further. We collaborated on deciding which songs by other bands would augment the sound we wanted as well as the sound of the band who wrote the song. Our opening jam was all original, the next song was by Sublime, called 54-46, after that we played an entirely original piece, and we then finished with Rollercoaster by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
M’NEER: What’s it feel like to have been chosen?
STEINMETZ: I personally had every intention of winning, due to the fact that I have missed playing music recreationally since the band Josh and I played in two years ago split up. I am literally in the clouds after winning last night, and I feel like every band that competed gave a very good element of competition to the dynamic of the Battle’s overall sound. Especially since the opening slot is such a difficult one to fill at any competition, I was taken quite by surprise at winning.
M’NEER: What are you most excited for?
STEINMETZ: I am most excited for all the rehearsing to come up until the Spring concert, since we now have to plan 3 hours of music as opposed to just a 20 minute audition. I am going to enjoy the winnings as any group member should, with the group. I think I speak for each of us when I say that.
M’NEER: What are you gonna do with the money?
STEINMETZ: Throw a party.
M’NEER: Can I have some of it?
STEINMETZ: If you come to the party.
M’NEER: Free 40’s?
