By Nicolas DealThe TreeWell, it’s that time of year again. With less than two weeks away from Christmas the Holiday Spirit is really kicking in. However, is it just me or does this year feel a little bit, greener? Sure, all Christmas trees are green, but ever since growing environmental awareness has spread across our nation, it feels as if this Christmas times are changing – which can only mean positive things for the coming year. First I’d like to say that 75 years, is a long freaking time. 75 Years New York City’s Rockefeller Center has put up the gigantic Christmas tree that many travel to midtown Manhattan in December to see all lit up. If you’ve never seen it, you should go, it’s quite a glorious site that really puts you in the holiday mood if you weren’t already.Even though they cut down this massive tree, this year they’ve found ways to remain environmental friendly during the process. For starters rather than using chainsaw or other machinery to cut the tree that will only give off carbon offsets, they’ve used a two person handsaw. Man, I’ll bet that took a lot of time! The next step after putting up the tree is the lighting it. Surely there are smarter ways to light all those Christmas lights, isn’t there? Of course there is! It’s called Light Emitting Diodes or LED’s for short. These energy efficient LED’s will take power from the solar panels up on the roof of Rockefeller Plaza to create the generation station which will give it the energy needed to spark up the tree. I don’t know about you but that’s much better than plugging it into the Pronto pizza place across the street! When the tree is finally taken down, it won’t just be thrown away to rot in the woods somewhere. Instead, the tree’s limber will be treated to become green lumber. A lot of planning must have gone into this entire process and in the end I think it will have been more than worth it. After all, is there anything better than a Green Christmas?
